What a plasterer does
A plasterer prepares the surface, mixes the plaster and applies it in thin layers with a trowel, then polishes it. The timing matters because plaster sets quickly.
Jobs people often ask plasterers to do:
- Plastering a new extension
- Patching after rewiring or plumbing
- Replacing lath and plaster ceilings
- Dry lining and taping plasterboard
- Repairing cracks
Before you book a plasterer
- Ask whether the price covers boarding, scrim tape and preparation or only the skim coat.
- Cracks can come back if the cause was movement. A good plasterer will tell you if they think the wall needs looking at first.
- Lath and plaster ceilings in older houses can be repaired or boarded over. Ask which suits your ceiling.
- Ask if the plasterer protects floors and furniture, and who clears up the dust afterwards.
