What a carpenter does
Carpenters measure carefully, cut and fit timber, and finish it ready for painting or staining. Quality shows in tight joints and even gaps.
Jobs people often ask carpenters to do:
- Hanging internal doors
- Fitting skirting boards and architraves
- Laying floorboards or laminate
- Building fitted wardrobes and shelving
- Boxing in pipes
Before you book a carpenter
- Ask whether the quote includes timber, and what type. Softwood, hardwood and sheet materials all behave differently.
- Fire doors have to be fitted to a specific standard, including the gaps and the ironmongery. Ask if your job needs one.
- Ask who will clear up, and who takes away old doors, frames or flooring.
- If a job involves a load-bearing wall or a roof timber, ask who is responsible for the structural check.
