What a bricklayer does
Bricklayers set out the wall, lay each course level and plumb, and finish the joints. Matching old brick and mortar takes real skill.
Jobs people often ask bricklayers to do:
- Building garden walls
- Repointing brickwork
- Rebuilding chimneys
- Replacing damaged bricks
- Building brick pillars and gate posts
Before you book a bricklayer
- Ask how a new wall will be tied into the old and whether it needs a damp-proof course.
- Matching old bricks is hard. Ask to see a sample of the brick and mortar colour beforehand.
- Ask if the price includes scaffold, skip hire and clearing waste.
- Cracks in brickwork can come from movement. Ask for an opinion on the cause before repair.
